How to Treat Peptic Ulcers

Ulcers that form in the stomach or duodenum are more commonly known as peptic ulcers, and sometimes referred to as gastric ulcers. They appear when there is erosion in the mucous lining of either the stomach or duodenum of the digestive tract. Some ulcers are caused by the bacteria that live in this acidic environment, the Helicobacter pylori, that multiples out of control and form an infection. These bacteria overwhelm the body’s natural ability to control their production and stimulate the over production of gastric acid which can lead to the erosion of the mucosa.

Peptic ulcers can also be caused by the regular use of aspirin and NAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs) prescribed to treat other medical conditions. Other causes may include smoking, alcohol consumption, improper eating habits, fatty and spicy foods, and other lifestyle choices. The overuse of laxatives has also been linked to the development of peptic ulcers.

There are other factors that have to be taken into consideration when assessing the probability of predisposition to ulcers. These include family history, genetics, personal history, chronic stress, and pre-existing conditions like gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or recurrent heartburn and indigestion.

It is advised that those who have a condition such as GERD, or those taking NAIDs or aspirin on a regular basis, pay special attention to symptoms that may occur, and be monitored by their physician to avoid the development of ulcers as some medical conditions and medications can increase the risk of an ulcer appearing.

Signs and symptoms to be aware of that could indicate that you may be more prone to the development of peptic ulcers comprise of chronic heartburn, abdominal pain (especially during or after a meal), bloating and abdominal fullness, nausea, vomiting where blood is present, weight loss, and loss of appetite.

If you experience these symptoms, it is recommended to consult your doctor to determine if you have an ulcer or if there is another condition causing your problem. It is important not to ignore symptoms, especially if they are recurrent as serious complications can arise if ulcers are present and left untreated.

In some cases, complications can be life threatening as in the case of a bleeding ulcer that is not taken care of properly. Your doctor can devise a treatment plan that can help heal the ulcer, prevent it from recurring, and assist in lifestyle changes that will keep you in good health.
